Six Sigma and Lean
It is easy to see when looking at Lean and Six Sigma how each of these philosophies have come to be used independently of each other. Each has its place and uses differing approaches in its application. What happens is that benefits are realised but not optimised when deployed independently. Typically after one is used the ‘other’ is then embarked upon. This action alone can bring about negative impacts as typically, the people in the organisation see the “old” philosophy as having failed and here’s the latest or “new” one to take its place!
Therefore there is a place in today’s business for Lean and Six Sigma to be used in conjunction to maximise opportunity and benefit. What is most important to remember though is that these are not to be seen as merely ‘initiatives’, programs, silver bullets to cure all ills.....but are simply ways of doing business. Jack Welch of GE described it as merely a way of doing business!
