Six Sigma as a Target
Six Sigma is a target of 3.4 Defects Per Million Opportunities as well as a measure and is recognised as a definition of world class performance. This target has its origin in the recognition that 99% performance level is not good enough. For example here is what 99% could mean:
Unsafe drinking water for almost 15 minutes each day
No electricity for almost 7 hours each month
20,000 lost articles of mail per hour
As the customer of the above we would not tolerate such performance. The Six Sigma target of 3.4 Defects Per Million Opportunities is equivalent to a performance of 99.99966%.
